Company History
From family-run business to international company
When Maria and Josef Falkensteiner opened a small family-run hotel with just seven beds in the South Tyrolean town of Ehrenburg near Bruneck in 1957, they had no idea what it would develop into over the course of the next fifty years. But they already had a vision to run a good, successful hotel back then.
Embracing new developments without forgetting our roots is what has set the company apart since the time it was founded. The Falkensteiner Hotel Lido Ehrenburgerhof was the first hotel in South Tyrol with a shower and WC in the room, and when Erich and Andreas took over the company after the death of their father, they opened the first incoming office in the region so that they could better market their family’s two hotels.
They then set their sights on growth. They acquired other hotels in South Tyrol and began to expand abroad after the purchase of a hotel in Vienna and a large holiday club in Carinthia (Austria). The company also gradually expanded its activities into other areas of tourism. The founding of the tourism consultancy Michaeler & Partner and the establishment of the central purchasing company GES laid the foundation for the current Group.
The company started expanding internationally into Eastern Europe in 2001. First into Croatia, then into the Czech Republic and finally into Slovakia.
The company’s further development led to the creation of a new corporate structure in the form of a holding company that brings together all of the business divisions under one roof. The founding of Falkensteiner Michaeler Tourism Group (FMTG) and the relocation of the company’s head office to Vienna set the course for rapid growth in CEE and CSE. Today over 1,300 employees from 13 countries work for FMTG.
